Ten-year-old Mary Lennox loses her parents in a cholera epidemic in India. The orphan with a well-to-do background is brought to England to stay with her strange uncle in a lonely castle at the edge of a moor. Her uncle – just like her own parents – avoids all contact with the sickly and selfish child. But her encounter with the cheerful housemaid Martha and her brother Dickon, who teaches her his love for nature and animals, turn Mary into a new person. She learns more and more about the world around her and turns into a healthy and lovable creature. On one of her walks through the countless stately rooms of the castle, she discovers her cousin Colin, who is the same age as her and appears to suffer from a mysterious illness. Together they find a secret garden hidden behind walls and ivy, which has not been entered since the death of Colin's mother. In this garden they uncover the dark secret of their family history…

Burnett's 100-year-old classic tells an exciting, still current, and hopeful story for children and adults alike, which shows that change is possible. Barbara Bürk and Clemens Sienknecht, whose recent production of »Effi Briest– allerdings mit anderem Text und auch anderer Melodie« (Effi Briest – but with another text and another melody) was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, will, after »Alice in Wonderland« and »The Wizard of Oz«, once again stage a classic piece for the Junges SchauSpielHaus.
